Preliminary lab analysis points to cyanide poisoning as the probable cause of death for 16 elephants in the Amboseli-Kimana ecosystem, Kenya Wildlife Service said.
The agency still cannot say where the toxin came from, after fresh tests cleared the tomato farms first blamed for the deaths.
A Six-Week Wave of Deaths in Kenya’s Most Watched Elephant Population
The deaths were recorded between June 24 and July 31, 2026, across Amboseli National Park, Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Kuku Ranch area in Kajiado County.
Most of the dead were adult females and calves.
KWS said the animals showed weakness and partial paralysis in their hind limbs before dying, often within one to two days of falling ill.
Ten of the earliest cases shared this same clinical pattern, which first led KWS to suspect a toxin rather than disease.
KWS Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga said the agency deployed veterinary and scientific teams from Nairobi, Tsavo, and Amboseli after the first case appeared on June 24.
Dr. Isaac Lekolool, KWS head of veterinary and capture services, told the Associated Press the animals showed paralysis and struggled to breathe before dying.
Lekolool said further testing is underway to determine the concentration of cyanide involved, and added, “We are yet to find out where this cyanide came from.”
Those teams have since conducted post-mortem examinations, collected samples, and expanded surveillance across the wider ecosystem.
The Tomato Theory Just Collapsed
KWS asked the Pest Control Products Board on July 30 to lead a multi-agency probe into whether pesticides or other crop chemicals had been misused, stored, or disposed of improperly around Kimana, Kuku, and Kitenden.
PCPB launched a joint field investigation with KWS on August 3 and collected tomato samples from farms across the Amboseli area.
Laboratory analysis of those samples found no cyanide.
Post-mortem examinations found tomatoes in the elephants’ stomachs, which is what first pointed investigators toward the farms bordering the park.
That physical evidence has not gone away, even after PCPB’s negative test results.
The elephants demonstrably ate tomatoes from the area before they died.
The specific tomatoes PCPB later tested did not contain cyanide.
Both of those things are true at once, and KWS has not yet explained the gap between them, whether the animals fed on a different, untested batch, picked up the toxin from something else entirely while foraging in the same fields, or ingested it through a pathway investigators have not yet traced.
The tomatoes in the elephants’ stomachs establish only that the animals grazed in cultivated fields before dying, not that tomatoes were the source of the cyanide.
KWS also confirmed that no pest control product containing cyanide is authorized for use on tomatoes or any other food crop in Kenya.
That finding does not clear the case.
It rules out the simplest explanation, which was that elephants ate cyanide-treated tomatoes and died from ordinary, if reckless, pesticide use.
The University of Nairobi tested biological samples from the elephants, while PCPB tested the tomatoes themselves, and KWS says the two results do not necessarily contradict each other.
The source of the cyanide that reached the elephants remains unconfirmed.
Investigators have not abandoned agriculture as a factor.
They are now looking beyond the tomatoes themselves, toward possible contamination of water, soil, and forage in the wider ecosystem.
KWS has also kept open the possibility that Cynodon plectostachyus, known locally as giant star grass, contributed to the poisoning, since the plant is naturally cyanogenic.
Farmers in the Kimana area told reporters before the PCPB results came back that the pesticides they use do not contain cyanide.
PCPB’s tomato results, released days later, now independently support that account, though they do not identify what did poison the elephants.
Farmers on the Ground Reject the Story They First Heard About Themselves
Elvis Muchai has farmed tomatoes on the edge of Amboseli for two decades and told the Associated Press he had never heard of a farmer poisoning wildlife in that time.
He said local communities have coexisted with elephants for years despite repeated crop losses when the animals cross the park’s electric fence during the dry season.
“We are used to the animals eating from our farms,” Muchai said.
That coexistence, not conflict, is the baseline Muchai describes, and the cyanide accusation ran counter to it before any lab result confirmed a source.
The elephant deaths have sharpened a broader concern in the region, that expanding agriculture along Amboseli’s boundary is intensifying friction between farming communities and the wildlife corridor they border.
Kenya has spent the past decade rebuilding its elephant population from historic poaching lows to more than 36,000 animals nationally, a conservation success story that this unresolved mystery now sits uncomfortably beside.
A State Audit Just Explained Why Kenya Cannot Answer That Question Quickly
An Auditor General performance audit, released the same week KWS confirmed the elephant deaths, found that PCPB has failed to adequately monitor and enforce pesticide compliance nationwide.
Seizures of expired, counterfeit, and unregistered pesticides rose to 28,617 kilograms in the 2024 to 2025 period alone.
The audit found PCPB lacks post-registration surveillance, an updated database of pesticide-handling premises, and any assessment of long-term environmental impact.
Dr. Paula Kahumbu, chief executive of WildlifeDirect, has called the Amboseli deaths a warning rather than an isolated tragedy.
WildlifeDirect is demanding an independent, multi-sectoral investigation involving KWS, PCPB, the National Environment Management Authority, and the ministries of health, water, and agriculture, with findings made public.
Kahumbu said Kenya’s pesticide governance, regulatory oversight and enforcement systems require urgent reform.
She has also called for accountability, saying officials and institutions found to have failed in enforcement should face administrative and legal consequences.
The United Green Movement party has echoed that demand, calling separately for an independent audit of pesticide supply chains and a ban on pesticides that remain legal in Kenya despite being restricted in Europe and North America.
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has criticized KWS directly, telling a community meeting that the agency has been slow to manage the human-wildlife interface that Amboseli depends on.
This Is Not Amboseli’s First Poisoning Event This Year
In January 2026, six lions and 32 vultures were poisoned in the same ecosystem, in an incident KWS linked to retaliatory poisoning at Kitenden Conservancy amid intensified human-wildlife conflict.
That timeline suggests a pattern rather than an isolated event.
Amboseli sits at the center of one of East Africa’s most closely studied elephant corridors, and its herds move constantly between park land, community conservancies, and farmland.
As farming pushes closer to those corridors, the margin for accidental or retaliatory poisoning narrows.
KWS says current investigations have found no evidence of an infectious or transmissible disease, ruling out an outbreak as the cause.
The agency has told the public and tourism operators that Amboseli National Park remains open and is operating normally.
The Stakes Extend Well Beyond the Herd
Amboseli’s elephants are among the most photographed in the world, closely tied to Kenya’s tourism economy and international conservation profile.
A cluster of deaths concentrated among breeding females and calves carries consequences beyond the immediate toll, since it can affect herd structure and reproduction for years.
WildlifeDirect has raised a separate concern that reaches past wildlife.
If cyanide-laced chemicals are entering the ecosystem at levels lethal to elephants, the same organization argues, the question of whether those chemicals are reaching local food and water supplies is not hypothetical.
KWS has framed the elephant deaths as a containable incident rather than a crisis, and its exclusion of infectious disease supports that framing so far.
But the unresolved question is no longer whether the park is safe for tourists today.
It is whether Kenya’s pesticide regulator, cited in its own government’s audit for weak enforcement, can trace a lethal contaminant through a shared farming and wildlife landscape before it reaches people as well as elephants.
