OREM, Utah — Tyler Robinson, 22, has been ordered held without bail in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, as authorities probe what led to the attack during a public event in Utah.
Robinson was arrested Sept. 12 after a 33-hour manhunt. Investigators say he was identified through surveillance footage and a tip from a family member who recognized him. He does not attend Utah Valley University, where the shooting occurred.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson has been uncooperative with investigators, though his roommate, who is transgender, is cooperating.
Robinson is being housed separately in the Utah County jail under protective observation and is scheduled to undergo a mental health evaluation. His first court appearance is set for Sept. 16.
Kirk, founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was killed Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” He was answering a question about mass shootings and transgender people when a bullet struck him in the neck.
Officials said the shot came from a rooftop about 140 to 200 yards away.
Authorities recovered shell casings near the scene engraved with messages, but their significance remains unclear.
Cox said Robinson had expressed anti-conservative views and consumed radical content online, though investigators stressed that no clear motive has been established.
“We are still gathering facts, and we urge the public not to spread misinformation,” Cox said.
